Our public libraries are just as diverse and unique as our islands. Journey "Somewhere Sunday" with us and explore our 51 library branches. This Sunday, we take a huakaʻi (trip) to the Kīhei Public Library on the south side of Maui.
The Kīhei Public Library was originally started by the Maui Friends of the Library in an outbuilding at the old Kīhei Elementary School. The present location opened in April 1996. The library maintains a special collection of Jewish literature, the Mitch & Suzie Katz Collection, which was inherited from a local synagogue. A traditional Hawaiian fishing shrine, or ko‘a, is located by the library’s parking entrance. The library’s garden was revamped in 2020 by a local Boy Scout troop and is now a beautiful grassy area surround by lei making plants.
