COVID-19 vaccinations begin in Maui County

C

Maui County issued the following announcement on Dec. 23.

The  first COVID-19 vaccinations were administered in Maui County today,  with the first doses going to frontline healthcare professionals at Maui  Memorial Medical Center this morning.

"This  was a momentous event in Maui County history. Vaccines are an important  step forward in protecting our community from COVID-19," Mayor Michael  Victorino said. "Although the vaccine will not be widely available to  the general public until next year, first priority has been given to our  frontline heroes -- healthcare professionals, first responders and our  vulnerable kupuna. I look forward to getting the vaccine. However,  limited supplies should be prioritized for those most at risk. We are on  the right path to restoring the health of our community and rebuilding  our economy."

Later  today, Maui County police officers, firefighters, paramedics and  emergency medical technicians received vaccines during a clinic at UH  Maui College.

The  vaccine is being provided in phases, based on supply. The first vaccine  doses are being administered to those in high-priority groups. As more  supply becomes available, the vaccine will be provided to other priority  groups and then to the general public next year. The vaccine is  voluntary. Eventually, all adults who want to be vaccinated will be able  to do so.
