The University of Hawai’i coed and women’s sailing teams competed in two regattas hosted by Stanford University in Redwood City, California over the weekend. The women’s team, known as the Rainbow Wahine, participated in the Bryson Women’s Fleet Race, completing 28 races split between A and B divisions. Martha Schuessler and Ann Tokoyoda represented the team in the A division, while Stella Taherian skippered all races for Elin Reigstad and Leila Landay, who shared crew duties. The Wahine secured one race win and finished in the top three eight times, ultimately placing third overall with 188 points. Stanford won the event with 76 points.
For the coed team, competition took place at the Top-9 Spring Invite. They also completed 28 races divided between A and B divisions. After a slow start that saw them at the bottom of the standings on Saturday, they improved on Sunday with 12 top-six finishes in their last 18 races. Erik Anderson and Amanda Turner raced in the A division, while Everett McAvoy and William Bagley split skipper duties in B division with Alister Muto as crew. The team finished fourth with a total of 242 points; Stanford again took first place with 114 points.
The Rainbow Wahine are scheduled to compete next weekend at the South Florida Team Race in St. Petersburg, Florida. Last year, they finished fifth at this event. The coed team will return to action at the Port of LA Harbor Cup from March 6 to 8 in Los Angeles after a short break; they placed second at this event last year.
