The County of Maui Department of Public Works announced on April 16 that South Kīhei Road will be closed between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 20. The closure is expected to last around the clock through June 20, weather permitting, as crews repair damage caused by recent Kona storms.
The closure is necessary due to washouts and roadway damage sustained during the storms. Only local access will be permitted in the affected area, while all other traffic is advised to follow detour signs using Ohukai Road, Kenolio Road, Kaonoulu Street, Piʻilani Highway and Kūlanihākoʻi Street.
This work marks the second phase of repairs along South Kīhei Road. The first phase focused on fixing damage between North Kīhei Road and Ohukai Road.
According to the Department of Public Works, these efforts are aimed at restoring safe travel conditions for residents and visitors in the area following significant storm impacts.
