The County of Maui Department of Public Works announced on May 11 that the weekday and Saturday closure of South Kīhei Road between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street will begin at 7:30 a.m. starting Tuesday, May 12, to better accommodate morning traffic.
The change in schedule aims to reduce disruption for drivers during peak hours while crews continue repairs caused by recent Kona storms. The department said the road will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with both lanes open during nonworking hours.
“The adjustment was made possible by the expedient work of our Highways Division and by the community accommodating the closures since the repair work began,” said County Public Works Director Jordan Molina.
According to the Department of Public Works, only local access will be allowed during working hours. Through traffic is advised to expect delays and follow detour signs via Ohukai Road, Kenolio Road, Kaonoulu Street, Piʻilani Highway, and Kūlanihākoʻi Street. Weather permitting, repairs are expected to continue through June 20.
This phase addresses washouts and roadway damage from Kona storms. The first phase—repairing damage between North Kīhei Road and Ohukai Road—has already been completed. More information about county public works can be found at www.mauicounty.gov/publicworks.
