Maui County Fire Department – Another Round of Dangerously Large Surf is on the Way for Maui’s North and Northwest Shores

0Comments

Another round of dangerously large surf is on the way for Maui’s North and Northwest shores.  Conditions from north of Lahaina all the way around to Kahului and out through Paia are likely with this large winter swell.

Shorelines that have been calm the last few days will have large dangerous surf, strong currents and waves that will wash up onto normally dry areas of the shoreline.  Use extreme caution at the beaches.

Check with our Maui County Ocean Safety Officers to see what hazards exist at the beach you are using.  Snorkeling, swimming and surfing for all but the most experienced and capable individuals is not advised.

Alert Sent On: 12/15/2022 03:38:29 PM HST:

* WHAT… North facing shores surf 20 to 25 feet. West facing shores surf 15 to 20 feet.

* WHERE… North and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai. North facing shores of Maui.

* IMPACTS… High. Expect very strong breaking waves and powerful currents. Waves breaking in channel entrances may make navigating the channels dangerous.

Stay away from the shoreline along the affected coasts. Be prepared for road closures. Postpone entering or leaving channels affected by the high surf until the surf subsides.
