The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team began its three-game road trip in San Diego with a 7-0 loss to the University of San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center on Thursday. This match leaves Hawai’i with a season record of 2-3, while San Diego improves to 4-3.
In doubles play, the Rainbow Wahine started with Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor losing 6-2 to Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Kristina Nordikyan. Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo responded by defeating Hannah Read and Gabby Gregg, 6-3, tying the doubles matches at one win each. However, Emma Forgac and Allaire Berl fell to Charlotte Keitel and Maria Smaova, 6-2, giving San Diego the doubles point.
San Diego carried this momentum into singles competition, winning all six matches. In the No. 1 singles spot, Grete Gull took Charlotte Keitel to three sets after winning the first set 6-0 but ultimately lost 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Emma Forgac won her second set against Ines Leon but was defeated in a third-set super tiebreaker (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 [10-3]). The other singles matches were decided in straight sets in favor of San Diego.
The Rainbow Wahine will face UC San Diego in their Big West opener on Saturday at Northview Tennis Courts. Additionally, their match against San Diego State has been rescheduled from Monday to Sunday due to expected bad weather.
