Hawaiʻi women’s tennis falls to San Diego State on road trip

The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team was defeated by San Diego State University, 4-0, on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego. This match concluded Hawai’i’s first road trip of the season, during which they posted a 1–2 record.

San Diego State took an early lead by winning both completed doubles matches. The No. 1 pair for Hawai’i, Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor, lost 6–0 to Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley. In the No. 2 spot, Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo were defeated 6–1 by Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache, giving SDSU the doubles point.

In singles play, SDSU secured the team victory by winning the first three finished matches. Gloria Alogo beat Emma Forgac 6-1, 6-3; Jayna Clemens defeated Sophie Rachor 6-1, 6-1; and Teja Tirunelveli won over Hannah Galindo 6-2, 6-1. Other singles matches were not completed once SDSU clinched the overall win.

Gull had a close opening set against Chan in singles and led in the second set before play stopped due to SDSU securing the fourth point needed for victory.

Hawai’i will return home to face Long Beach State in a conference matchup scheduled for Saturday, February 28 at the UH Tennis Complex with play beginning at 11 a.m. HT.
