The University of Hawai’i men’s golf team began play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Monday, recording a score of 295 in the opening round at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. This result places them tied for 18th alongside UC Riverside.
Colorado currently leads the tournament with a team score of 276. Sacramento State is in second place with 279, followed by Maryland at 280, Wyoming at 281, and Oral Roberts at 283.
Individually, four golfers are tied for first place after shooting a five-under-par round of 72: Jack Watters from UC Santa Barbara, Brody Knowlton from Wyoming, Spencer Clatt from Omaha, and Parker Paxton from Colorado.
For Hawai’i, Cameron Combado posted a one-over-par 73 to lead his team and is tied for 59th overall. His score matches his lowest single-round performance this season. Teammates Alec Hilgers, James Whitworth, and Dane Watanabe each finished with a two-over-par 74 and are tied for 73rd place. Nathan Szpakowicz completed the round with an 81 and stands in 121st position.
The second round will continue on Tuesday with an 8:00 a.m. PT shotgun start.
