The University of Hawaiʻi women’s tennis team announced on March 11 that its match against Bucknell was canceled because of rain during singles play. The match, which began after a weather delay, will not be rescheduled.
The cancellation affects both teams as they were unable to complete the competition. The Rainbow Wahine, ranked 48th nationally and holding a 5-4 record overall (2-0 in Big West), had shown strong performances in several singles matches before the weather forced an early end.
Originally set for a 4 p.m. start at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu, the match was delayed until 6:30 p.m. due to soggy conditions. Despite the late start, players managed to begin singles matches before worsening weather led officials to call off play.
Several University of Hawaiʻi players were leading their matches when play was stopped. Grete Gull won her first set against Tori Allen and led in the second set; Makeilah Nepomuceno dominated her opening set and was ahead in the second; Sophie Rachor and Hannah Galindo also held leads in their respective matches, while Allaire Berl was close to sweeping her opponent.
Looking ahead, the Rainbow Wahine will stay at home for their next scheduled match against UC Irvine on Friday, March 27. First serve is planned for 4:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
