The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team lost to Brigham Young University (BYU) with a score of 4-1 after a five-hour rain delay at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu. Despite winning the doubles point, Hawai’i was unable to maintain its early lead as BYU secured victories in four consecutive singles matches.
Hawai’i started strong by claiming the doubles point. The No. 2 pair, Toa Maeda and Azuma Visaya, defeated BYU’s Caden Hasler and TJ Wells, 6-2. Shortly after, Kent Mueller and Adriano Dzhenev won against Tygen Goldammer and Alexander Edmonston with the same score.
However, BYU responded by taking control in singles play. Tygen Goldammer beat Kosuke Nakanishi on court three, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. On court two, Timothy Li lost to Yubel Ubri in three sets: 3-6, 6-1, 2-6. Adriano Dzhenev dropped his match against Hardy Owen on court six with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 4-6. On court one, Azuma Visaya won his first set but ultimately fell to Adam Chodur in three sets: 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
In the second-set tiebreaker during Visaya’s match against Chodur, Visaya rallied from a five-point deficit to tie it at five before Chodur closed out the set and eventually won the match.
Two singles matches—Hikaru Takahashi versus David Duong and Kent Mueller versus Caden Hasler—remained unfinished when BYU clinched victory.
The Rainbow Warriors will play their next match against Portland on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
