The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team is set to host two matches this week at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu. The Rainbow Wahine, with a current record of 2-1, will face Utah on Friday, February 6, followed by their Big West Conference opener against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, February 7. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Hawaii Time.
Utah enters the matchup with a 3-1 record for the season. After an initial loss to UC Santa Barbara, Utah has secured three consecutive victories over Idaho State, Utah State, and Montana. The Utes lead the all-time series against Hawai’i 2-1 and have won the last two meetings between the teams. Their last encounter was in April 2005 when Utah won 7-0. Utah’s singles lineup is led by Emma Kamper, who is ranked No. 37 nationally and holds an 11-4 record entering this week’s competition.
Cal State Fullerton comes into Saturday’s match with a record of 1-2. The Titans began their season with a win over UC Riverside but then lost matches to Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and Grand Canyon University (GCU). Before facing Hawai’i, Cal State Fullerton will play against Hawai’i Pacific as part of their road trip in Hawai’i. Amelia Zylberman leads the Titans with a perfect start in singles play at No. 4 position and holds a 2-0 record.
In recent action, Hawai’i claimed back-to-back home wins over Sacramento State on January 22 and January 23. Junior Hannah Galindo secured both victories for her team and remains undefeated this season at 3-0 in singles play. Freshman Grete Gull also performed strongly during those matches by winning both contests on court one.
Following these two home matches, Hawai’i will travel to California for away games against San Diego on February 12, UC San Diego on February 14, and San Diego State on February 16.
