FOIA Request to University of Hawaii Maui College Regarding Chinese National Students on June 4, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at the Maui Reporter have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of Hawaii Maui College. This request seeks comprehensive data concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.
Our inquiry specifically requests documentation or lists detailing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, including their respective departments of study. In cases where student names are protected under privacy laws, we have asked for a total count of these students broken down by department.
Additionally, we are seeking information about scholarships awarded to these students. This includes the amount each student receives and the source of each scholarship. We have also requested details about any scholarships granted by organizations affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.
Furthermore, our request extends to any existing policies or procedures that outline how the university monitors its students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to safeguard intellectual property and other confidential information.
This FOIA request is made on behalf of both our publication and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating state and federal governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. As members of the media, we emphasize that access to public records is crucial for holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public.
We look forward to receiving this information promptly as it plays a vital role in informing our community about matters affecting local governance and education systems.
