Image 2: What are Greenhouse Gases & Why Do They Matter for Our Islands? Greenhouse gases (GHG) are byproducts of natural processes and human activity. These gases trap heat in our atmosphere. The combustion of fossil fuels — especially by planes, vehicles, and for electricity — increases the concentration of these gases in our atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect.

Image 4: How can we reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Maui County? Lessening the effects of GHG emissions should involve both mitigation (reducing the emissions we release into the atmosphere) and adaptation (finding ways to adjust to an expected future) efforts. The County’s Climate Action & Resiliency Plan will strategize ways to reduce emissions from commercial and residential electricity, fossil-fuel powered vehicles, and waste. It will also focus on Maui’s land as a resource for carbon sequestration.
