Celebrating 50 Years of Title XI

Mayor Michael Victorino proclaimed the month of June as Title IX 50th anniversary month on Thursday. He credited Maui’s own late Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink as co-author of the groundbreaking legislation that became law in 1972.

The law prohibits gender-based discrimination in any school, university or educational program that receives federal funding.

Leslie Wilkins, president and CEO of the Maui Economic Development Board, read the proclamation, and Mayor Victorino presented it to Maui High School basketball standouts Leiana and Kayla Thornton.

Dr. Allicia Imada joined via Zoom to share her story of how Patsy Mink paved the way for her to graduate from medical school. Allicia is the daughter of former Maui News Managing Editor Lee Imada.
