Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Hawaii Maui College

In-state tuition and fees rose 1.9 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Hawaii Maui College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Hawaii residents paid $3,218 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $60 more than the $3,158 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 159.6 percent more than residents this year, or $8,354. Their price tag grew 0.7 percent from $8,294 in 2017-18.

About 95 percent of the school’s undergraduate population are Hawaii residents. About 4 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 65 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 234 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.1 million and 42 students took out student loans totaling more than $208,566.

Including all undergraduates (3,092), 1,438 students used grants or scholarships totaling $6.2 million, and 322 students took out $2.2 million in federal student loans.
