University of Hawai’i junior Anson Cabello is set to compete in the PGA Tour Sony Open in Hawai’i, which will take place from January 15 to 18, 2026, at Wai’alae Country Club in Honolulu. This marks Cabello’s first appearance in a professional tournament after he secured his spot by winning a local qualifier in November.
Cabello, who hails from Kahului, Maui, will play alongside Zecheng Dou and Pontus Nyholm during the first two rounds. His scheduled tee times are 8:49 a.m. on Thursday and 1:19 p.m. on Friday.
This is the seventh occasion that a member of the Rainbow Warriors has qualified for a PGA Tour event. Previous qualifiers include Blaze Akana, who participated in the Sony Open in both 2023 and 2024, as well as T.J. Kua (2010) and David Saka (2011). None of the six prior University of Hawai’i qualifiers have made the cut at these events.
Now in his third season with the Rainbow Warriors men’s golf team, Cabello is experiencing his best season so far for 2025-26. In three fall tournaments, he posted a team-leading average of 70.33 strokes per round and recorded par or better scores in eight out of nine rounds. At the Kā’anapali Classic by OUTRIGGER last November, he finished with a score of 10-under 203—tying for the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history and tying for sixth-lowest relative to par.
Cabello has achieved three Top 20 finishes this year, with his lowest round being a four-under-par 67 at the Kā’anapali Classic. Over his collegiate career spanning 45 tournaments at UH, he holds an average score of 73.51.
The Sony Open marks the start of the PGA Tour’s 2026 schedule. The Rainbow Warriors will resume their own season from February 5 to February 7 at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate tournament in Waimea, Hawai’i.
